The Application of Data-Driven Learning Approach into Speaking Instruction A Study of Learners’ Perceptions

Data-driven learning (DDL) is a computer-aided corpus application in language instruction which enables language teachers and learners to work with corpora in the classroom.  Previous studies have examined the impact of corpus tools in EFL writing, grammar or vocabulary instruction; however, the application of corpus tools into EFL speaking instruction has got little attention. Thus, this paper presents a study of corpus use in enhancing English academic speaking performance of EFL learners with a focus on their perceptions of DDL approach. The participants were fourth-year EFL major undergraduate students at Mekdela Amba University, Ethiopia.  In the intervention, which lasted for six weeks, the participants were taught target language features for speaking via data-driven learning approach. Questionnaire and students' reflective journals were employed to collect data. Data collected through a post-instruction perception questionnaire was analyzed using descriptive statistics. The data obtained from students’ reflective journals, on the other hand, was analyzed qualitatively, via narration. Results indicate that participants found data-driven instruction potentially helpful in developing their speaking skills, and also hold positive attitudes towards using it in learning speaking. Based on the findings, it was recommended that data-driven learning approach should be integrated into EFL speaking instruction.
